One time I saw this guy from high school at a restaurant and I had to
go say hi and he hugged me which was a little uncomfortable because I
never hugged him in high school so why should I hug him now? But
anyway, we hugged. He said how are you. I said fine and how are you he
said fine and then we stood there. Okay. Then he said. Oh I read your blog. Cool you wrote a book. Thanks I said. Yeah, he said. Then he said, I like to read blogs. It's like you can spy on people. Yeah, I said even though it's sort of a weird comment. Then he said, I read your sister's blog. She's on my blog alert (or whatever that thing is called). Oh, I said. Then he said, Yours isn't. Sorry. I didn't really know how to respond. And then he hugged me again and I got to go away.
Also,
last week I read Speaker for the Dead and the Tenant at Wildfell Hall.
I have things to say about both of those books but I'm not going to
because two nights ago I went to friend's house and ate really
delicious fish tacos and they were good. Then last night, i was at a
church thing and i said, I ate some really good fish tacos last night. And a girl said, what kind of fish. And I said, Tilapia. and she said, Oh sick. That's like garbage fish. That's like the cheapest fish there is. Really? i said. I like tilapia. But
then I found out it's not the best according to many many other people
who apparently eat fish for a living (I don't). But i still loved the
fish tacos and I like tilapia.
Also, on Friday I'm speaking at
the forum for childrens writers at UVSC. I'm going to talk on form. I'm
also going to wear really tight clothes because I'm this:
I was
trying to find a picture of a pregnant lady that I could post but they
were all naked and I happen not to be naked at the moment so I didn't
think it would be accurate to post.
I'm not really that far along so don't tell your neighbors yet.
Also,
TIWID is on Voya's list of good reads for middle grade readers. Just
kidding. It's called: VOYA: Voice of Youth Advocates has published
their 2007 Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Readers List. I just cut
and pasted that in and it was really hard because I just got a new
macbook and I gave my Dell to Cam so now i can't do anything except
make excellent movies and graphic design.
Sheesh. A lot of
news. I also need some more readers of the week. And I just made peanut
butter cup cookies and it's over 40 degrees today. Plus i like that
pioneer woman cooks blog because the pictures are really good and the
food looks delicious. But I've never made anything from there so I
wouldn't recommend it.
Clearly it's been a long time since I
blogged but you wouldn't know that because I'm probably not on your
blog alert thing so this will be a surprise in the next year when you
check. On a whim and everything. |

I'm going to try to explain myself and I don't know why. For the past
few months or I guess I should say, a few months ago and then for the
past few months before that, I felt like a plastic bag full of air. In
a windstorm. I worried about everything. My book. My next book.
Publicity. Controversy. Reviews. Chocolate Milk. Mistakes. Signings.
Speaking. Writing. People. Questions. Expectations. Teaching. Dogs. And of course, my family. Now, things are different. I think the bag has popped. I
was wondering if I'd been punched out of air. Or if I let the air seep
out. Or if it got too big and big and big and then boom. I also wondered what a punctured bag was supposed to do.
All
I know is I feel better. A little deflated. A lot more relaxed. Sort of
surprised. A lot full of what's next. But most of all very relieved.
A deflated bag in the gentle wind is much better than a full bag in a windstorm. I think.

You like the cover below? I'm so glad. |

I appreciate all the encouragement and advice for my failed muffins. Yes, chili pepper actually does enhance whole wheat muffins. They were better than I thought. I think they put chili peppers in those sexy chocolates in the very fine movie Chocolat, right? So maybe you should make some sexy whole wheat muffins for Valentines. You know you want to. I'll send you the recipe if you're interested.
Also, family is feeling better and Mr. Baby is running around spreading cracker crumbs of cheer throughout the house. Yay! I never realized how lazy I was. Or how lazy I long to be until this young man got his legs on and started running into rooms and slamming doors. Please open up, honey. Can Mommy come in? [I push the door open, he slams it shut] Mommy wants to play in the bathroom too. Can she come in? [Door slams shut again]. Okay. I get it. You want your privacy. [I slide to the floor and wait for him to get scared because there aren't any lights on. Then Splash, splash, splash--he's figured out how to open the lid in the pitch dark. Love it.]
Also, I have the new cover for my upcoming book Everything Is Fine
Reading level: Young Adult Hardcover: 160 pages Publisher: Little, Brown Young Readers (March 1, 2009) Language: English ISBN-10: 0316013641 ISBN-13: 978-0316013642
that won't be out for umm, a year, but still. It's really fun to see the cover. It will be up on my website shortly.
And also, Sweethearts is OUT. I haven't read it yet but I cannot wait. Since we've been sick and weasly at our house, I've just barely started to emerge and the first item on my agenda is to pick up Sara's new book. I would put links and things but I'm working on a mac that I'm not used to so I'm not so smart. But the name of the book is Sweethearts. The name of the writer girl is Sara Zarr. Word on the street is it's sweet.
And finally, TIWID won YA book of the year by the Association of Mormon Letters. Thatsa good.
I think that's all. Except if you're from Utah, you'll be really anxious to know that the Gateway Mall (or the street that goes through the Gateway) has been renamed Sesame Street! Why you ask? Why? To be continued . . . |

The build up to these readers of the week is incredible. Today we have
a very special young man who enjoys making guacamole for school parties
and producing Spanish Batman movies. He also happens to be quite funny
and a very talented writer. With no further ado, I introduce Max. Hi Max. Hi. Thanks for letting me interview you. Sure. So what's your nickname? Maxilicious. Interesting. Where did you get that? T Jelly made it up. Who is T Jelly? My cousin. Okay, so how old are you? 14. How does it feel to be 14? Like,
I guess you could say it's like a squirrel trapped in a blender that
isn't on at the moment but you know it's going to turn on any second. Yes. I can see that. Okay, what's your favorite book? I like the Silver Chair.
Why?Umm, because I was able to use that for a book report twice. [MAX! says his mom who is sitting in the room. Max just laughs.] Okay, what is the first book you ever read? The Lorax. It's a good book because it taught me to stick it to the man. You know, the little arm thing? (I'm not sure about the arm thing but we move on, nonetheless). Okay, so do you like to read?Kind
of because if it's the dictionary then I don't like to read or a thesis
on how to blend fruits, I don't like to read. Books about ducks or
other small animals taking over the world? Those kind of books are
worth reading. I nteresting.
I'm not familiar with a lot of smallanimalstakingovertheworld books but
I'm sure there are some. So what do you like to do besides read and
stick it to the man?I like to draw and make up songs. Please put a recording of my song on your website. I need the publicity. [He
then performed a rousing original song about Thanksgiving. I hope to
have it posted soon. I'm not too tech savvy at the moment but I know
Max needs a following so I'll do my best to get it up ASAP.] I
also like to make movies. My friends and I made a batman movie for
Spanish class. We've been trying to get famous but we can't get it on
YouTube [His old brother, who is also in the room, says, "It's easy to
put videos on YouTube." Max says in return, "Don't belittle me Charlie,
it hurts too much."]. You guys okay? [they are] Okay, so wow. So creative.Yes. What's your favorite food?Shepherd's Pie. Really? Your favorite food is Shepherd's Pie?It's
a delicious combination of four bland foods that combined makes a super
delectable dish. It deserves applause [he applauds]. Huh. I never would have guessed. So what are you afraid of?Gigantic spiders eating my face off. I also don't like vomit on me. [Dad who is also also in the room says: that and really tight underwear which makes me throw up.] Max
agrees. He says: yes, and clothing with low absorbency so my
embarrassing liquids don't show.[EVERYONE starts laughing and Max turns
red] Like sweat!!! You people have sick minds. Okay, what do you have to say about reading? Don't read boring stuff unless you have to because boring books make boring people and boring people make me sad. Any last thoughts? Bananas are a great source of potassium.
Thank
you Max! As always, if you have any questions or comments for our
reader of the week, feel free to post away. And if you happen to
have/know of any animalstakingovertheworld books, Max is on the
lookout. Also, feel free to start Maxilicious fan clubs. He's going to
be BIG very soon.
