is the Provo Book Festival at the Provo Public Library which also happens to be my dad's old high school. It's a beautiful building (and also the VERY PLACE where Cam and I had our wedding party/dance). And, aside from it being an awesome place, it's going to be an awesome event. There will be all kinds of famous Utah authors. Sara Zarr, Brandon Mull, Brandon Sanderson, Chris Crowe, Anne Cannon, Rick Walton, Anne Bowen and many many others. So if you're into picture books, fantasy, science fiction, REALISTIC YA FICTION, or basically anything having to do with reading for kids and teens, you won't want to miss this. Sara and I are doing a book talk thingie at 1:00 and then I'll be signing afterwards with a lot of big wigs. So come play.

In other news, Mr. Baby spilled all my kosher salt right on the floor. Then he drew pictures in it. So creative. ALSO, the BYU Writing for Children conference is coming up. I'm excited.

I think that's all for now.

My interview with Cynthia Leitich Smith is up and running! Here's how that makes me feel:

That's a happy but serious face. I don't know what to tell you about the other face . . . excited? Maniacal?

Maniacal EDIT: Link to interview is now working.

Taxes are done, thanks.

last night cam was doing our taxes and i was reading the NEA Today magazine that comes in the mail for my mom who I guess was a member like forty years ago.

Except I wasn't really reading, I was in a semi-conscious state because guess what? I go to bed around eight and it was about eight fifteen but I felt like I needed to stay up and support my husband by reading about how to recognize gang members (they are everywhere!) and how 80% of public school teachers quit within the first five years. I also read about how many teachers are fired for putting naked pictures of themselves on facebook and Myspace. I tried to tell Cam about that article but he kept interrupting me to ask really silly questions about 1099s (no idea) and LLCs (don't know, call my dad). I think I helped.

In the end, he finished around 11:40 pm and had to go to the post office but not until we had a lengthy discussion about how much we owed, how much the government owed us, how we need to just buy TurboTax and whether there was still wet clothes in the washer.

I remember none of this conversation.
HOWEVER, Cam did verify I participated and thus I was awake and very supportive during the whole ican'tbelievewewaitedtillapril15thtodoourtaxes ordeal.

This morning I've been reading a lot of US and OK magazines because my niece is in town and she's my supplier. It's very important. Reese and Jake are in love. Tori tells all. I don't know what the Hills is. Next I'm going to write my book, scrub the toilets and make Mr. Baby clean his room.

Thank you and goodbye.

Oh and P.S. Prom is still on my mind but without the Bean (she asked, they declined) I'm not sure if it will happen. I love the SLC options but I'm not a SLC resident so I feel scared.

P.P.S. Jen, I'm very sorry I lost my phone on the very day you were in town. Unfortunately you could come almost any day and it would be the same story. I have MAJOR phone problems and thus the constant regret over losing the landline. I hope you had a wonderful day and we'll have to plan over the internet.

You are invited to prom this year

someone just rang my doorbell and I'm just going to stay here and see if they'll go away. I hope they didn't drive here from California to see me. I also hope I didn't win anything but I only get it if i answer the stupid door. why not just answer the door? because I'm not really all that appropriately dressed, because baby made a booby trap of plastic bowls directly in front of the door, because I don't like surprises unless they are presents that are discreetly left on the porch by nice people. So sorry doorbell ringer. If you want me to open my door, please call first.

The power just went off. Does that have anything to do with doorbell ringer? Should I just cowboy up (thanks karen) and see what's going on? Or maybe it's better to stay undercover. What if it's a robber. I hear strange sounds.

And, because I've been in and out of nothingness for quite some time I had a really fantastic idea last night around two am. I decided I'm going to have a prom. It's prom season after all and maybe I could use a night of hair done, fancy clothes and getting my groove on. I called my sister who happens to be the education director of the Bean Museum in Provo which has a lot of dead animals in it and which I happened to think would be the perfect place for a intervention prom for all needtogetoutpeople who would like to attend.
I said, I'm having a prom.
She said, You can't have a prom. You're pregnant.
I took offense to this. Thousands of pregnant girls go to prom every year. Why should I be the exception?
So I said, I beg your pardon.
And she said, Why do you want a prom?
And I said, Because I need a prom.
She said, No one needs a prom.
I said, I beg your pardon.
and she said, okay, have a prom but if I come I am not dressing up.
I said, yes you are.
She said, no I'm not but I'll take pictures.
I said, We'll see.
Then I said, Can we have it at the Bean Museum among the dead animals?
she said, No.
I said, oh come on.
She said, write a proposal and we'll discuss it in a meeting.
BLAH.
So that's out. And thus, I am going to have a prom but I don't know where yet. And I dont' know when. I don't know how. and Maybe it will be a private prom and I'll wear a poofy dress and do the roger rabbit in my kitchen. I will do it. I will. and you will all be sorry you didn't come. If you want to come, you are invited. And if you have a venue that would be appropriate like a dead animal museum, please let me know. I am quite serious about this.

Also, I'm speaking to 100-120 middle school students on Friday in an auditorium. I thought it was going to be like 20-30 students in a classroom. What will i say? What will I do? Should I wear a prom dress? I sort of want to. I miss you all and as you can tell, I am more motivated today than i have been for weeks. I'm blogging and I took a shower AND I'm planning a prom. Stay tuned.
